JCC falls to GCC in WNYAC Tournament action

NORTH EAST, Pa. – With an undefeated record coming into the WNYAC Tournament, Jamestown Community College came up short against Genesee Community College in second round action.

 

The Jayhawks (24-5, 6-1 WNYAC) came away with a win in their first match of the tournament, coming away with a 2-0 set win. JCC posted set scores of 25-20 and 25-14. Karleigh Haines paced the Jayhawks on offense with 11 kills. Jennah Starkweather added five kills with Alexys Marsh chipping in with four kills.

 

The offense went through Maddy Russo who had 19 assists during the match. Russo also led the way on defense, coming away with seven digs. Haines and Marsh were forces on defense at the net, blocking five ECC attacks.

 

The shocker on the afternoon came against the Cougars in the second match of the day. GCC came away with a 2-0 victory, posting set scores of 15-25, 21-25. JCC had a hard time finding their offense with Jenna Caskey leading the team with seven kills while Haines chipped in with six kills.

 

Russo was able to add 19 more assists on the day while also getting one service ace. The backcourt defense was hard at work as Cameryn Hawkins had a team high 12 digs. Caskey added 11 digs while also having one block.

 

The team will now look ahead to the NJCAA Region III Tournament where they are the No. 1 seed. They will face the winner of Herkimer College and Genesee Community College next weekend.
