ROCHESTER, Minn. – Facing adversity after the first two sets, No. 6 Jamestown Community College won three straight sets in order to defeat No. 9 Jefferson Community College to take seventh-place at the 2019 NJCAA DIII Volleyball Championships.

The Jayhawks (30-7) posted set scores of 22-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19 and 15-9. JCC dropped two sets to the Cannoneers in one match, as many as they have dropped in two matches earlier in the season. Jamestown regrouped before the start of the third set, going on a 10-2 run. During the stretch, The Jayhawks were rewarded six service aces, two from Jenna Caskey and four from Emma Wirsen.

Jefferson stopped the run, scoring six straight points of their own to make it 10-8. The team traded points for a stretch before the Jayhawks gained a six point lead, up 19-13. Jefferson was able to add two more points, thanks too two kills from Alyssa Evans. Jefferson continued to fight but came up short as JCC closed the set on a 4-1 run.

With the Jayhawks showing life, they carried over their momentum into the fourth set, going on a 6-1 run. During the run, Alexys Marsh was credited with two points. The teams traded point's, but Jefferson went on a 6-2 and were trailing, 10-8. Throughout the match, JCC maintained some cushion leading as much as eight points. Towards the end of the set, the Cannoneers pressured the Jayhawks, scoring five of the next seven points. JCC quickly put the set to rest with a kill by Karleigh Haines.

With one final set of the 2019 season, both teams buckled down, going point-for-point. The teams were tied 6-6 before JCC scored four straight points. During the run, the Jayhawks got kills from Caskey and Haines along with two errors from the Cannoneers. Jefferson stopped the run, scoring back-to-back points before the Jayhawks closed the match out on a 5-1 run.

On the day, Caskey led the offense with 18 kills, connecting on .325 percent of her attacks. Haines added 14 kills while Marsh and Megan Gominiak added eight kills each, respectively. Maddy Russo had a great day orchestrating the offense, raking up 49 assists. On the defensive side of the ball, Caskey had a team-high 18 digs while Wirsen adding 17 digs. Cameryn Hawkins chipped in with 16 digs.

The Jayhawks finish the 2019 season in seventh place for the third straight season. JCC finishes with at least 30 wins for the second time in the past three years.
