Coach Anderson Recruits in Sweden

Coach Anderson Recruits in Sweden
JAMESTOWN - For Pat Anderson, head coach of Jamestown Community College’s men’s soccer team and the college’s longest tenured coach, coaching doesn’t take a break during the off-season.

Competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region III can be a tough task year in and year out, with the top half of the region ranked nationally. To complement his roster of talented local players and enhance the team’s competitiveness in the region and across the NJCAA, Anderson visited Sweden for the Bluechip Sweden Showcase early this year in hopes of finding student-athletes for JCC’s team.

“I get invited to soccer showcases on a regular basis,” said Anderson. “For a soccer showcase, we have to spend a significant amount of money to go wherever it happens to be. In this case, Joakim Frisk, the one running the showcase, wanted us to come. JCC’s athletics and global learning programs split the bill, enabling me to head to Sweden.”

JCC prides itself on being a diverse institution and having international students plays a big role. Not only are these students able to participate in the NJCAA, they bring cultural experiences with them.

“Bringing in international students to help JCC athletics is a great opportunity for everyone involved,” said Anderson. “The experience of meeting people from all over the world and learn about different cultures can really help broaden the experience.”

Reflecting on the Swedish soccer showcase, “Overall it was a great experience,” said Anderson. “I was able to see players who could maybe help us. At the same time, I was able to experience Sweden’s culture and make connections that could help the JCC men’s soccer team, other teams, and the institution as a whole.”

Anderson hopes to build on last season’s success in which his team finished with a 12-6-3 record, Anderson’s most wins in a season dating back to 2012 and the first double digit win total since 2013. The team ended its season with a loss to Genesee Community College in the Region III semifinals.

Anderson hopes to fill the holes left by 12 departing sophomores, which include goalkeeper Jakob Moore. Moore signed a National Letter of Intent recently to play at NCAA Division I Dixie State University in St. George, Utah.
