Torres named Region III Player of the Week for the third straight week

JAMESTOWN – After yet again another impressive week on the mat, Dan Torres was named the Region III Player of the Week for the third week in a row.

Torres, the No. 1 ranked 174 pound wrestler in the country, posted a record of 5-0 on the week which included a first-place finish at the Jamestown Community College Open.

His first win of the week came against No. 7 Niagara County Community College by forfeit and that was foreshadowing on what was to come.

Having his full energy going into the JCC Open, Torres ran the table, going 4-0 on the day. In his first match, Torres made light work of Mike Southwick, getting the fall in 36 seconds. In the quarterfinal match, Torres kept good pace against Nathan Parker of RIT, a NCAA Division III school, picking up a 14-3 major decision victory.

Heading into the semifinal match, Torres squared off against Brent Burbules of NCAA Division II Mercyhurst University. Torres battle hard and made the right moves when necessary, getting the 5-1 decision win. In the championship match, Torres wrestled Derek Brown of NCAA Division I Clarion University. Torres went on the offensive early and often, coming away with the 9-0 major decision victory.

This is Torres’ fifth Region III Player of the Week award this season.
