JAMESTOWN – With the 2019-20 wrestling season coming down the final stretch, it has been one to remember for sophomore Dan Torres.

Torres, the Cassadaga native, has had a chip on his shoulder since last season where he made the trip to nationals, but went 0-2 on the big stage. “I know that I could have performed better last year at nationals,” said Torres. “It showed me what I had to work on and it has motivated me all season long.”

This season, Torres has posted a 36-6 record which is one win away from a new Jamestown Community College wrestling single-season record. On his path, Torres has placed at five different opens and invitationals, collecting two first-place finishes.

“Dan has been laser focused this semester,” said Head Coach Kris Schimek. “From extra workouts to rehab, Dan has stayed as sharp as he can be.” Coach Schimek believes that Torres is on the path to greatness once nationals comes around. “I don’t care if we go into the tournament seeded dead last, Dan is on a vision quest this season,” continued Schimek. “When you do all the right things, then the right things happen to you. He has done everything possible to be a national champion and I firmly believe he will be.”

When asked about his season record and rewriting the record books, Torres said that’s not what he’s worried about. “I didn’t even know what my record was,” said Torres. “Whenever we’re in a tournament, I ask (coach) Schimek what bout number I am. I don’t even look at the brackets or worry myself with who I’m going to wrestle, I just compete with the same mindset,” continued Torres.

Torres’ work has not gone unnoticed amongst the other coaches. Torres has been ranked No. 1 in the 174-pound weight class, thanks in part to the 2020 portion of the season. Torres has posted a record of 13-0 in the new year and is looking to add more to the win total. Contributing to his win total, Torres cleaned house at the Waynesburg Invitational and JCC Open, getting a total of eight wins and two first-place finishes.

Torres will continue his hot season as he and the rest of the Jayhawks travel to Alfred State this Friday for their final dual of the season.
