Athlete Spotlight for 11/23/15

Roger Williams is the Jayhawks Athlete Spotlight for the week.  He is a member of the wrestling team at JCC, is a freshman student, and is also blind.  His story is a true inspiration to many here on campus.

Williams chose to go to school here because the campus is close to home and the cost is affordable.  He wrestled in high school at Chautauqua Lake and was asked to wrestle here; naturally he was ready and excited for the new challenge.  So far his season has been great; he has enjoyed all the traveling to various events that the team gets to do.

For the rest of the season and year, Williams' goals are primarily focused on education and doing well in all his classes.  His goal is to work as a personal trainer and give out the basic exercises and knowledge in nutrition; he recognizes the value of his schooling in this pursuit.  All of these things, Williams has been able to achieve in spite of his blindness.  This is clearly an obstacle that could hold him back, but he has never let it do that so far.

His words of advice to fellow athletes reflect his attitude of hard work and optimism on life: "You're the only person in your way of getting to your goals."
