Three Jayhawks Named To WNYAC All-Conference Team; Rudny Named Coach Of The Year

BUFFALO - With the regular season coming to a close and postseason upon us, it is the time where athletes are recognized for their accomplishments throughout the season. That was the case for the Jamestown Community College volleyball team as they had three players being selected to the Western New York Athletic Conference All-Conference Team along with Coach of the Year.

 

Sophomore setter Madison Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central), sophomore outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central), and sophomore right side Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) represented the Jayhawks while Head Coach SallyAnne Rudny, in her first season at the helm, was named WNYAC Coach of the Year.

 

Madison Johnson, Sophomore Setter – All-Conference

Johnson played in 27 matches for the Jayhawks, facilitating the offense. Johnson currently has 747 assists, averaging 8.49 assists per set. Johnson tied the most assists in a four-set match early in the season against Herkimer College, dishing out a career-high 49 assists. Johnson eclipsed the 30-assist mark in 12 matches on the season.

 

Johnson was also effective on the defensive end for JCC, collecting 197 digs including a career-high 22 digs against Genesee Community College to close out the regular season. Johnson collected double-digit digs in six matches.

 

Emma McCarthy, Sophomore Outside Hitter – All-Conference

McCarthy has played in all 27 matches for the Jayhawks, leading the team in kills with 228. McCarthy’s 228 kills rank second in the conference and third in Region 3. McCarthy’s best offensive output came in early in the season against Herkimer College, getting a season-high 19 kills. McCarthy had 10 matches of 10 or more kills on the year.

 

Claire Pumford, Sophomore Right Side – All-Conference

Pumford has also played in all 27 matches this season for the Jayhawks, being a key fixture on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Pumford has 158 kills on the year, which is second on the team. Pumford had a season-high 10 kills in two matches on the season.

 

On the defensive side of the ball, Pumford is second on the team in digs with 257. Pumford had a career-high 26 digs to start her sophomore campaign, coming in a match against Lakeland Community College. Pumford had 12 games of 10 or more digs.

 

SallyAnne Rudny, Head Coach – WNYAC Coach of the Year

Rudny has made an impact on the conference, winning the WNYAC Coach of the Year in her rookie season steering the ship. During her first season as head coach, Rudny currently sits at 17 wins including a perfect 3-0 record within the conference. Rudny helped guide the Jayhawks to a seven-match win streak during the month of September and won 17 of 21 matches heading into the NJCAA Region 3 Tournament. Under Rudny’s direction, the Jayhawks will be the No. 4 seed in the NJCAA Region3 Tournament after posting a 13-3 record within the region.
