Jayhawks Soar To NJCAA North District B District Championship Game

SANBORN - Looking to come out of Pool B and a chance to compete for a NJCAA North B District Championship, the Jamestown Community College volleyball did just that to secure them a spot on Sunday.

 

The Jayhawks (19-11) road to championship Sunday went through No. 5 Erie Community College, No. 7 SUNY Broome Community College, and No. 2 Jefferson Community College. JCC won five of nine sets against these teams which made them the top team from Pool B.

JCC started the day with a tough battle against the Kats, falling in the first set by a score of 24-26. The Jayhawks erased a seven-point deficit to tie the set at 24-24 before ECC pulled it out. In the following two sets, the Jayhawks fell by scores of 16-25 and 12-25.

 

The offense was led by the duo of Emma McCarthy (Olean, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) and Cadance Main (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) with nine kills each. Sophomore setter Madison Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central) facilitated the offense, coming up with 24 assists.

 

On defense, freshman libero Sydney Ulasewicz (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) compiled 17 digs with Johnson adding 14 digs. Freshman outside hitter Mikala Einink (Clymer, NY/Clymer Central) chipped in with 11 digs.

Looking to keep their championship aspirations alive, the Jayhawks would have to flip the script and they did indeed. Facing the No. 7 seeded Hornets, JCC got in their groove and dominated the match from start to finish.

 

The Jayhawks posted set scores of 25-21, 25-13, and 25-16. On offense, it was the duo of McCarthy and Main leading the attack, each collecting 12 kills. Johnson orchestrated the offense to perfection, getting 33 assists.

 

On defense, Ulasewicz led the way with 15 digs with Johnson adding 14 digs. Sophomore right side Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) had a solid defensive game as well, coming away with 10 digs.

The road to championship Sunday came down to the Jayhawks winning two sets and they did just that against the Cannoneers, posting set scores of 25-16, 25-18, and 19-25. McCarthy continued to led the offense late into the day, getting 12 kills with Main adding 10 kills. Johnson added another 30-plus assist game to her day, collecting 32 assists.

 

Defensively, Pumford led the way with 13 digs with Johnson adding 11 digs. The Jayhawks also showed a strong presence at the net with Main getting three solo blocks with Pumford adding two solo blocks.

 

Prior to today's matches, Johnson and McCarthy were recognized by the region with each being naemd to the NJCAA Region 3 Second Team All-Region.

 

The Jayhawks received the No. 1 seed from Pool B, facing the No. 2 seed Finger Lakes Community College from Pool A. The teams will play for a berth into the national tournament tomorrow, October 30th, at 1 p.m. on the campus of Niagara County Community College.
