Jayhawks Wrap-Up Owens Invitational

PERRYSBURG, Ohio - Closing out their trip to the Owens Invitational, the Jamestown Community College volleyball team dropped their final two matches of the weekend.

 

The No. 5 Jayhawks (1-4) had a tough task to start out the morning of competition, going up against DII Glen Oaks Community College. JCC dropped three straight sets to the Vikings, 25-9. 25-6, and 25-11.

 

Freshman setter Madison Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central) was all over the court for the Jayhawks, finishing with a team-high in assists with seven, kills with seven, and added seven digs.

 

Freshman outside hitter Breanna Gilbert-Hopkins (Falconer, NY/Chautauqua Lake Central) led the team in digs, posting eight during the match.

 

Moving on to the second match, the Jayhawks would be facing No. 1 Owens Community College. JCC fought hard against the Express but ultimately Owens would come away with set wins on 25-12, 25-19, and 25-16.

 

Sophomore Emma Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) led the offensive attack, collecting eight kills. Freshman outside hitter Megan Cotter (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS), middle hitter Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS), and outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) added five kills.

 

Johnson added 23 assists and eight digs. Claire Pumford had a team-high 10 digs while adding two blocks.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action next Thursday, September 9th, as they host Niagara County Community College for a 6 p.m. start.
