Jayhawks look to make some noise at the Volleyball Championships

JAMESTOWN - The No. 6 Jamestown Community College volleyball team will look to make some noise this week as they compete in the 2019 NJCAA Volleyball Championships held in Rochester, Minn.

The Jayhawks (28-5) have had a 2019 season for the books, with many accomplishments but one still remains. During the regular season, JCC mowed through the competition, winning as many as 22 matches in a row. The Jayhawks were bested by Genesee Community College in the WNYAC tournament but was able to turn it around in the Region III Championships. The Jayhawks had no problem securing the championship, defeating SUNY Broome in three straight sets. The win marked the Jayhawks third Region III Championship in a row.

JCC was selected as the No. 6 seed heading into the National Championships, facing Fashion IT out of Region XV. The Tigers posted a season record of 26-2, including an undefeated record in the regular season. Fashion IT will look to rid the sour taste in their mouth, losing two of their last three matches.

The Tigers are led by a trio who have posted 100-plus kills on the season. Stephanie Berdon leads the team with 129 kills while Clarissa McNeil is close behind with 126. Carly Gallagher has added 118 kills while Lauren Miksits has 101 kills, respectively. The Tigers have options when running their offense with Berdon having 366 assists on the season. Amber Diaz will also be a threat to put her team in position for success, having 233 assists on the year.

On defense the Tiger?s frontcourt is protected by Miksits who leads the team in total block woth 40 (218 solo, 22 assists). McNeil is second on the team with 32 blocks (13 solo, 19 assists) with Berdon having 31 blocks (11 solo, 20 assists). The backcourt will be run by Jenna Butler who has a team-high 283 digs.

The Jayhawks are no strangers to the national stage and it helps to have a veteran team to get you there. JCC is led by Jenna Caskey who has been named the Region III Player of the Year, All-Region First Team, Region III Tournament MVP and All-WNYAC. Caskey has been a force at the nets, leading the way with 373 kills which is seventh best in the country. Caskey has also let her presence be known on the defensive side, coming away with 375 digs which is second on the team.

Caskey is joined by Karleigh Haines on the frontcourt on offense. Haines was named to the All-Region First Team, Region III All-Tournament Team and All-WNYAC for her stellar performance in her freshman season. Haines is second on the team with 347. Haines has also been consistent on the defensive side of the net, coming away with 50 total blocks (30 solo, 20 assists).

Cameryn Hawkins has been the leader for the Jayhawks, patrolling the backcourt. Hawkins was selected to the All-Region Third Team, Region III All-Tournament Team and All-WNYAC. Hawkins has a team-high 451 digs.

Maddy Russo has been orchestrating the offense for the Jayhawks. Russo was named to the Region III All-Tournament Team and All-WNYAC Team. Russo has racked up 1,024 assists, good for seventh in the country. Russo has also averaged 9.85 assists per set, ranking third in the nation.

The Jayhawks are have options when it comes to the frontcourt with Alexys Marsh and Megan Gominiak. Marsh leads the team in total blocks with 72 (53 solo, 19 assists) to go along with 172 kills. Gominiak has also been a force at the net on defense, coming away with 52 blocks (32 solo, 20 assists).

JCC will be under the guidance of Head Coach Ashley Lund. Lund was named the Region III Coach of the Year and WNYAC Coach of the Year after a successful regular season. Lund will look to keep the team on track to make a deep run.

The Jayhawks will play Fashion IT tomorrow, November 14th, at 1 p.m. With a win, JCC will play tomorrow night at 7 p.m. With a loss, JCC will play at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
