Jayhawks Get the Split on the Road at FLCC

CANANDAIGUA - Keeping their momentum going on the road, the Jamestown Community College softball team split a doubleheader matchup with Finger Lakes Community College while on the road.

 

Game 1: Jamestown Community College 6 - Finger Lakes Community College 13

 

The Jayhawks (2-10, 2-10 Region 3 West) found themselves in a hole early in the first game, falling behind 7-0. JCC was able to get on the board in the second inning as freshman third base Emily Horth (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley HS) grounded out to third while freshman catcher Gracie Wood (Warren, PA/Warren Area HS) coming home for the run.

 

JCC continued to chip away at the deficit, scoring three runs in the third inning. Freshman center fielder Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) singled to right field and advanced to second on an errant throw. On the throw, sophomore second base Renee Szymanski (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville Jr. Sr. HS) and freshman left fielder Abigail Minnekine (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley HS) came in to score.

 

The Jayhawks made it a 7-5 game in the fifth as Wood singled to right field, driving in Minnekine. The Lakers tacked on a pair of runs at the bottom of the inning, making it 9-5.

 

JCC scored their final run of the first game in the sixth as designated player Jaida Perry (Franklinville, NY/Ten Broeck Academy) laid down a sac bunt, scoring freshman shortstop Brynn Pagett (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS).

 

FLCC closed out the game, scoring four unanswered runs.

 

Pagett finished with a double with Nance leading the way with two rbis.

 

Pagett earned the loss in the circle, giving up five earned runs. Freshman pitcher Samantha Heppel (Angola, NY/Lakeshore Sr. HS) came in for relief, giving up four earned runs while striking out seven batters.

 

Game 2: Jamestown Community College 16 - Finger Lakes Community College 4

 

The Jayhawks quickly flipped the script in the second game, going up 7-1 after two innings played. Nance got the party started, hitting a bomb over the right field fence. Wood scored the next run on an error from the Lakers.

 

With the bases loaded, freshman designated player Kara Leeper (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) was hit by pitch, driving in Szymanski. Freshman first base Abbi Warner (Westfield, NY/Westfield HS) flew out to center field and on the tag, Pagett came home to make it 4-1.

 

Freshman right fielder Mackenzie Watson (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) joined the party, hitting an rbi single to drive home Horth. Nance continued her strong day at the plate, hitting a two-run triple to bring Watson and Leeper home.

 

FLCC got one back in the third before the Jayhawks scored nine unanswered runs over the next two innings. In the third, Warner singled to center field, driving in Horth. On an errant throw to first, Leeper scored to make it 9-2. Watson singled to left field, driving in Warner for the Jayhawks last run in the inning.

 

In the fourth, Wood scored on a wild pitch while Pagett advanced to second and Szymanski to third. Szymanski came home on a sac fly by Horth with Leeper hitting an rbi single up the middle to bring home Pagett.

 

Warner got in on the fun, hitting a double down the right field line to drive home Leeper, making it 14-2. Warner and Minnikine made it back home on back-to-back wild pitches, making it 16-2.

 

The Lakers would tack on two runs late but the rally would fall short.

 

Nance and Warner had the big bats in the game, driving home three runs each. Watson, Leeper and Horth each had two rbis in the game.

 

Heppel went the distance in the circle, giving up two hits, one earned run and getting three strikeouts.

 

The Jayhawks will be back home this Thursday, April 22nd, as they take on FLCC at the Fireman's Field in Lakewood. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
