Jayhawks Fall to Corning in Doubleheader Action

LAKEWOOD – Looking to avoid the season sweep, the Jamestown Community College softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon to Corning Community College at the Fireman's Field in Lakewood.

 

Game 1: Jamestown Community College 0 – Corning Community College 17

 

The Jayhawks (0-6, 0-2 WNYAC) started to find their bats in their home-opener, collecting five hits. Sophomore second base Renee Szymanski (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville Jr. Sr. HS) led the way with a pair of hits. Freshman short stop Brynn Pagett (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS), outfielder Gracie Wood (Warren, PA/Warren Area HS), and first base Kara Leeper (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) each had a hit as well.

 

Freshman pitcher Samantha Heppel (Angola, NY/Lakeshore Sr. HS) went the distance in the circle, giving up 12 hits while striking out six batters.

 

Game 2: Jamestown Community College 0 – Corning Community College 14

 

In the backend of the double header, the Barons held their defensive hold over the Jayhawks who had one hit in the game. Sophomore right fielder Mackenzie Watson (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) had the lone hit onin the game for JCC.

 

Heppel showed her skills as a baserunner, getting one stolen base after getting on after being hit by a pitch.

 

Heppel earned the loss in the circle, giving up nine hits in 2.2 innings of action. Pagett came in relieve, going 1.1 innings and getting a strikeout.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday, April 17th, as they take on Monroe Community College at home. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
