Jayhawks Make it 6 Wins in 7 Games 63-57 Over Sullivan

JAMESTOWN, NY - It wasn't the prettiest win that Coach Dave Turnbull and his Jamestown Community College (JCC) women's basketball team will ever earn, but it was a victory nonetheless as they topped SUNY Sullivan 63-57.

The Jayhawks fell behind early, trailing Sullivan 15-5 nearing the end of the first quarter.

That's what sophomore transfer Jennica Berens started to find her shot. She nailed back-to-back buckets to help cut the deficit down to six halfway through the second. Berens finished with a game-high 20 points.

JCC pulled to within three just before half when local product Alyson Canfield made a fastbreak layup to help the Jayhawks trail by only four at the break, 27-23.

Canfield kept doing damage at the start of the second. The freshman scored four points in just 13 seconds to give JCC its first lead, 29-27. She finished the game with 11 off the bench.

As the third quarter wound down, Myla Truitt got in on the action, hitting two jumpers to push the Jayhawks' edge to 35-29. The sophomore captain ended the game with 11.

Jamestown's lead grew to as much as 11 as another captain, Kaleigha Plett, finished at the hoop to make it 41-30.

The lead stayed around double digits most of the second half. Sullivan threatened late, getting within five at 62-57, but Turnbull put his starters back in to close things out and secure the six-point win.

This victory is their sixth in seven games and makes JCC 6-2 on the year.

The ladies stay home as they host Genesee Community College on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
