CANANDAIGUA - Opening up the 2023 season, the Jamestown Community College softball team dropped a pair of games to host Finger Lakes Community College Sunday afternoon.
In the first of the doubleheader, the Jayhawks (0-2, 0-2 Region 3) fell by a score of 16-8 and in the second game fell by a score of 14-4.
Game 1: Finger Lakes Community College 16 - Jamestown Community College 8
JCC was led offensively by catcher Sydney Dahl (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley HS) who went two-for-three from the plate including a triple while also driving in four runs. Pitcher Jamaladie Pacheco (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) also collect two hits with centerfielder Angelique Palacio (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) hitting a triple.
Palacio got the scoring going for the Jayhawks in the first, advancing on a steal by first base Savanna Krystofiak (Brocton, NY/Brocton HS). Dahl brought in Krystofiak with a single as JCC took an early 2-0 lead.
After four runs scored by the Lakers in the bottom of the first, the Jayhawks added another run in the second inning as left fielder Cheznea Rivera (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville HS) scored on an error by FLCC to make it 4-3.
FLCC added six runs in the bottom of the third to make it 10-3. In the top of the fourth inning, the Jayhawks made a rally by scoring five runs. During the five-run explosion, Dahl hit a bases clearing triple to drive home Palacio, Pacheco, and shortstop Desiree Nelson (Window Rock, AZ/Window Rock HS). Dahl later stole home to cap off the run to make it 10-8.
The Lakers added five insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure the win.
JCC took advantage on the bases, collecting 10 stolen bases as a team with Dahl, Rivera, and third base Jena Vacanti (Brocton, NY/Brocton HS) leading the way with two stolen bases apiece.
Pacheco earned the loss in the circle for the Jayhawks.
Game 2: Finger Lakes Community College 14 - Jamestown Community College 4
In the backend of the doubleheader, JCC was led by Nelson with a pair of hits and an RBI with Palacio added another RBI.
After falling behind 5-0 in the opening inning, the Jayhawks got on the board with a single from Palacio to score Pacheco. Nelson drove in Dahl on a single to make it 5-3.
After a scoreless second inning, the Lakers added three runs in the third. JCC added their final run of the game in the bottom of the third with a home run by Palacio.
Pacheco earned the loss in the circle where she surrendered 11 earned runs while striking out a pair of batters.
The Jayhawks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 4th, as they travel to Genesee Community College for a 3 p.m. start.
