Several Jayhawks Featured In The Bill Weitzel Collegiate Baseball League

SALAMANCA – Summer time is upon us and with that, comes a new collegiate baseball league. The new league in the area is the Bill Weitzel Collegiate Baseball League.

 

“This league is structured to give collegiate baseball players an opportunity to work during the week and play on the weekends,” said founder Jerico Weitzel. “This is a time where student-athletes can work on their development of the game to help them out once get back to their respective campuses.”

 

There will be many familiar faces playing in the league this summer including seven players from the Jamestown Community College baseball team. Playing this summer from the Jayhawks is catcher Lucas Porpiglia (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS), middle infielder Chris Navarro (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS), outfielder Donovan Lockett (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS), infielder Jackson Yost (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS), and pitchers Walt Rybczynski (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis HS), Zach Rohlin (Russell, PA/Eisenhower HS), and Tanner Potter (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg HS). Also playing in the league is former Jayhawk and Pitt-Bradford commit Aaron Hair '22.

 

“I am pleased that many of our current players wanted to come out and compete in the league,” Weitzel said. “Everyone benefits with them getting more field time and I’ll be able to work with them and continue their development.”

 

League started play this past Sunday, June 19th, where the Limestone Lizards and Bradford Black Bears in a doubleheader action where the teams split.

 

With interest growing, the league has announced an expansion team with the Jamestown Expos coming into the mix. The Expos will begin play this Sunday, June 26th.

 

All games will be played at the Salamanca High School Veterans Park throughput the summer.
