Jayhawks Have Offensive Explosion, Split Road Doubleheader with Corning CC

CORNING – On a rainy afternoon, the Jamestown Community College baseball team split their doubleheader with Corning Community College on Wednesday.

 

Game 1: Jamestown Community College 9 – Corning Community College 1

 

The Jayhawks (9-12, 7-7 Region 3 West) were firing on all cylinders in the first game, going up quick to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago HS) reached on base after being hit by a pitch with one out. With JCC's next at bat, Hennessy stole second with sophomore catcher Billy Harmon (Racine, OH/Southern Local) driving him in with a triple to right field. Sophomore Nick Rini (Powhatan, VA/Knock HS) drove in Harmon on a groundout to second base.

 

JCC went up 3-0 in the second inning with an rbi single to left field by second baseman German Nolasco (Spring Hill, FL/Weeki Wachee HS) to bring in redshirt-freshman first baseman Yordangel Gonzalez (Miami, FL/ Miami Jackson Senior HS) to score. The Red Barons answered with a run of their own to make it 3-1 after two innings of action.

 

The Jayhawks kept adding onto their lead with a run scored in the third and fourth innings. Rini added another rbi on the afternoon with a sac fly to right field to bring Harmon into score. In the fourth, freshman shortstop Ethan Abegg (Commerce City, CO/Prarie View HS) hit a sac fly to left field to bring Gonzalez in to go up 5-1.

 

In the fifth, the Jayhawks added two more runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Sophomore third baseman Roberta Aracena (Miami, FL/Citi Christian Academy) showed his speed on the bases, hitting a two-run inside the park homerun to deep center field. Rini also came into score from first base.

 

After a quite sixth inning, JCC added two insurance runs in the seventh. Rini went yard on a moon shot to right field for a two-run homerun. Harmon added another run on the day.

 

Rini went 1-for-2 at the plate with four rbis while Harmon went 2-for-3 with three runs and one triple.

 

Redshirt-freshman Bryce Jackson (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) was phenomenal on the bump for the Jayhawks, fanning out three hits in seven innings of action. Jackson also set a new make in strikeouts, retiring 13 batters.

 

Game 2: Jamestown Community College 6 – Corning Community College 8

 

The Jayhawks continued their momentum into the backend of the doubleheader, taking a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning of action. With runners on first and second with no outs, Harmon grounded out to the shortstop with Abegg coming into score. Rini added another rbi on his day, grounding out to third as Hennessy came to home plate. Lupo capped off the first-inning explosion with a sline drive single to right field, bring in Aracena to score.

 

In the third, Hennessy start out with a double to right field to put him in scoring position. Harmon added his second rbi of the game with a ground ball to left bring that brought Hennessy home. During the inning, the game was delayed due to weather and would have an hour delay.

 

The delay shifted the momentum to the Red Barons, scoring one run in the fourth and six more in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead.

 

JCC was able to get one run back in the sixth with a ground ball to center field by Nolasco drove in freshman center fielder Ayden Reagle (Jamestown, NY/Maple Grove HS) to make it 7-5. Corning CC answered with a run of their own to take the 8-5 lead.

 

Looking to battle back, sophomore catcher Lucas Porpiglia (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) start things off with a double to center field.  Freshman left fielder Josh Lupo (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point HS) drove in the final run with a ground ball to the shortstop to bring home Porpiglia. The rally for the Jayhawks fell short.

 

Hennessy went 2-for3 at the plate with two runs with Nolasco going 2-for-2 with one rbi.

 

Sophomore pitcher Adonis Collado (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy HS) went four inning, giving up four runs and striking out five. Harmon went the rest of the way, giving up two earned runs.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday, May 1st, as they travel Niagara County Community College for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
