Aracena Propels the Jayhawks Past the Panthers in the Sweep

JAMESTOWN - In hard fought victories, the Jamestown Community College baseball team swept Tompkins Cortland highlighted by sophomore third baseman Roberto Aracena (Miami, FL/Citi Christian Academy) hitting the walk-off rbi single in game two.

 

Game 1: Jamestown Community College 7 - Tompkins Cortland Community College 4

 

The Jayhawks (3-4, 1-3 WNYAC) fell behind early with the Panthers going up 2-0 in the early going of the second inning. Freshman shortstop Ethan Abegg (Commerce City, CO/Prarie View HS) got JCC on the board, driving in sophomore catcher Lucas Porpiglia (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) on a line drive to left field.

 

In the third, TC3 answered as Taj Muhammad homred to left field, taking the 3-1 lead. Aracena cut the deficit to one, scoring on a throwing error by Caleb Thompson.

 

In the fourth, the Jayhawks found some offnes, scoring two runs. Porpiglia scored with Abegg laying down a bunt to the third base line. Freshman right fielder Josh Lupo (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point HS) drove in Abegg on a sac fly to left field, putting the Jayhawks up 4-3.

 

Looking to add insurance runs, JCC scored three more in the sixth inning. After reaching on a triple to right field, Lupo scored off a single to left field from Aracena. Porpiglia drove in two more runs to close out the inning off a double to center field.

 

The Panthers added one more run in the seventh.

 

Aracena led the way in hitting, going a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with Porpiglia and Lupo each getting two hits.

 

Aracena, Porpiglia, and Lupo all had extra base hits on the day while Aracena and redshirt-freshman Yordangle Gonzalez (Miami, FL/Miami Jackson Senior HS) each had one stolen base.

 

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Bryce Jackson (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) went the distance on the mound to earn the win. Jackson fanned out eight hits while getting 11 strikeouts.

 

Game 2: Jamestown Community College 8 - Tompkins Cortland Community College 7

 

The Panther jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead through two innings before JCC got on the board. Abegg got the Jayhawks on the board, sending a line drive to center field, driving in Porpiglia.

 

Continuing to chip away at the Panther lead, Abegg  drove in sophomore right fielder Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago HS) with a single to left field.

 

TC3 added another run in the fifth before the Jayhawks made it a 5-4 game. With the bases load with no outs, sophomore first baseman Nick Rini (Powhatan, VA/Knock HS) was hit by a pitch, scoring sophomore second baseman German Nolasco (Spring Hill, FL/Weeki Wachee HS). JCC scored their other run of the inning as Hennessy showed great discipline at the plate, earning the walk and scoring Aracena.

 

The Panthers went up 7-4 in the sixth innings with a pair of runs scored. The Jayhawks answered with three runs scored of their own as Lupo drove in Abegg, reaching on an error by Garrett Fox. To tie the game, Rini singled to right field to score Nolasco and Lupo.

 

Heading into the final frame Porpiglia reached by a hit by pitch with freshman center fielder Ayden Reagle (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove HS) and Abegg each getting walked.

 

With one out left, Aracena took a 1-1 count and singled to left field, driving in the game-winning run.

 

Abegg had a career-day at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4. Porpiglia also had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-3.

 

Nolasco showed his speed on the bags, getting one stolen base.

 

Sophomore pitcher Adonis Collado (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy HS) started the game, pitching in 3.1 innings while giving up one hit.

 

Sophomore pitcher Billy Harmon (Racine, OH/Southern Local) came in as a relief, going in 3.2 innings, fanning out four hits and getting five strikeouts.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action next Saturday, April 10th, as they host Corning Community College for a doubleheader. First pitch is set at 1 p.m.
