Jayhawks play strong in Region III POD Tournament

The JCC Jayhawks Women's Volleyball Team (16-5) went on the road for Region III POD Tournament play at Niagara County Community College.  Their first opponent was the Hornets of Suny Broome Community College (12-5).  The Jayhawks came into the contest winning an impressive 13 out of their last 14 contests and all the wins were 3-0 sweeps.  The first set saw the Jayhawks continue their strong play as the Hornets kept it close with the Jayhawks taking the win 25-18.  The second set saw something the Jayhawks haven't seen in some time, a loss, as the Hornets beat the Jayhawks in a close one 25-23 to tie the match 1-1.  The Jayhawks were able to wrestle the momentum back from the Hornets and win another close set 25-22.  The fourth set, although well fought by the Hornets, was won by the Jayhawks 25-23 which gave the Jayhawks the victory in the match 3-1.  The Jayhawks were led by #9 SallyAnne Rudny (Jamestown) who had 26 kills and 10 digs; #10 Madison Alexander (Jamestown) had 11 kills, 5 aces, and 9 digs; #2 Destiney Portlow (Olean) had 9 kills and 4 digs; #7 Miranda Gross (Little Valley) had 4 kills, 46 assists, and 7 digs; #8 Erin Butman (Jamestown) had 6 kills; and #4 Ashley Butman (Jamestown) had 18 digs.

The Jayhawks (17-5) second opponent in the Niagara POD Tournament was the Panthers of Tompkins Cortland Community College (3-15).  After their close battle in the previous match with Suny Broome, the Jayhawks stayed sharp and aggressive, taking the first set strongly over the Panthers 25-12.  The second set saw the Jayhawks continue to play fast paced and dominant volleyball as they won the second set 25-11.  The third set proved the first two sets were no fluke, as the Jayhawks finished the match strongly with a 25-11 win to defeat the Panthers 3-0.  The Jayhawks were led by #10 Madison Alexander (Jamestown) who had 9 kills and 4 digs; #9 SallyAnne Rudny (Jamestown) had 9 kills; #7 Miranda Gross (Little Valley) had 28 assists and 7 aces; #2 Destiney Portlow (Olean) had 6 kills and 4 digs; and #8 Erin Butman (Jamestown) and #12 Elizabeth Swoger (Ripley) had 4 kills each.

The Jayhawks (18-5) third and final match of the Niagara POD Tournament was the Red Barons of Corning Community College (14-9).  With two evenly matched teams, a thrilling first set was had that saw the game go to a 27-25 win in favor of the Jayhawks.  The second set was not as close as the first but still too close for comfort as the Jayhawks won 25-21.  The third set was also closely contested with the Jayhawks downing a determined Red Barons squad 25-22 to win a tough match 3-0.  The Jayhawks were led by #9 SallyAnne Rudny (Jamestown) who had 22 kills; #10 Madison Alexander (Jamestown) had 10 kills and 3 aces; #2 Destiney Portlow (Olean) had 9 kills; and #7 Miranda Gross (Little Valley) had 33 assists.
