Needing to win out and get a lot of help to qualify for the NJCAA Region 3 Division III postseason, Jamestown Community College dropped a doubleheader to Finger Lakes CC on Tuesday at Diethrick Park.

The Lakers scored four runs early and held on for a 7-5 win in Game One before rallying for an 8-2 victory in Game Two.

Finger Lakes CC (18-24, 14-11) pushed across four runs in the top of the first inning on a pair of errors by the Jayhawks (9-19, 9-17) before Cody Cooper and Austin Teets contributed RBI singles.

Jamestown CC answered with a run in the bottom of the second as Noah Weinstein and Matt Hair singled ahead of a Steven Krystofiak sacrifice bunt. Bryce Sherrard drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Finger Lakes CC scored two more in the top of the third as Nick Ferrino led off with a double and scored on Matthew Carroll's RBI single. Teets drove in Carroll with an RBI double.

The Jayhawks scored two in the bottom of the fifth as Cam Haberberger was hit by a pitch and D.J. Yates walked before an RBI single by Weinstein. Krystofiak drove in Yates with a two-out RBI single.

After the Lakers added a run in the top of the seventh, Jamestown CC battled back with two runs in their last at-bat. Yates, Weinstein and Hair all singled to load the bases with two outs before Ryan Johnson hit a two-run double. Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, Hair was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Weinstein went 4 for 4, Hair had three hits and Johnson had two hits for Jamestown CC. Johnson took the loss, throwing 5 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. Austin Mitchell threw the final 1 2/3 innings for the hosts.

"I'm glad that Noah had some success today. It was killing him to sit out as long as he did. He is the backbone of our team. We go as he goes. We definitely welcomed him back with open arms," Jamestown CC coach Matt Cummings said about the return of his starting catcher from injury. "It's a whole different ball game when you have a kid like Weinstein behind the plate. Our pitchers have confidence to be a little more aggressive with their pitch selection. Noah is going to slide and glide to block the baseball."

The Jayhawks went up 2-0 through three innings of Game Two before Finger Lakes CC scored six runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to win going away.

Gavin Beaumont and Haberberger had two hits apiece while Sherrard doubled in the loss.

John White took the loss, throwing 4ª innings, striking out two and walking one.

The sweep made it nine straight losses for the Jayhawks since they went one game above .500 in the region.

"Once we got into a skid, we really couldn't get out of it. The most frustrating part is our guys beating themselves with errors and mental mistakes," Cummings said. "With the potential we showed early in the year, we have kind of cooled off since then. You can't win games in Region 3 when you commit errors and shoot yourself in the foot."

Jamestown CC wraps up its season with doubleheaders at Erie CC today and Niagara County CC on Thursday.
