Jayhawks fall to Columbus State in the Quarterfinals

ROCHESTER, Minn. – No. 6 Jamestown Community College fell to No. 3 Columbus State 3-0 Thursday evening at the Rochester Regional Sports Center.

 

The Jayhawks (29-6) fell in three sets of 15-25, 16-25 and 15-25. The Cougars were able to jump out to a quick 8-3 lead in the first set before JCC was able to get back-to-back kills rom Alexys Marsh and Jenna Caskey. The Jayhawks were also recipients of an error from Columbus State, making it 8-6. The Cougars were able to retake the momentum, scoring the next four points.

 

JCC would close the gap to five points, making it 13-8 in favor of Columbus State. The Cougars took over the set, pushing their lead to 16-8. JCC was able to get some points back thanks to a kill by Caskey and back-to-back errors on the Cougars, making it 24-15 to keep hope alive. Columbus State was able to put the match away on the next possession.

 

Columbus State was able to take advantage of their attack opportunities, connecting on .243 percent of attacks attempted, including a swing percentage of .311 in the second set.

 

The Jayhawks were led offensively by Caskey who had 11 kills while Karleigh Haines added eight kills. Maddy Russo had 18 assists for JCC. Cameryn Haines led the way on the defensive side, coming away with 13 digs. Haines and Caskey were right behind her with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

 

JCC will move to the consolation side of the bracket where they will face No. 7 Harper (25-21) tomorrow at 3 p.m.
