Jayhawks sweep Broome to become Region III Champs once again

SANBORN – For the third straight season, the Jamestown Community College volleyball team are Region III Champions.

 

The Jayhawks (28-5) got a clean sweep over SUNY Broome Community College, but it did not come easy. In the first set, each team battled back and forth and neither team could gain any ground. JCC was able to get the win down the stretch with a set score of 25-22. In the second set, the Jayhawks carried their momentum, opening up on an 8-1 lead. JCC carried their momentum to a 25-15 set win.

 

With their season on the line, the Hornets came out firing in the third set. Broome was able to get a sizeable lead over the Jayhawks and were thinking of sending the match to a fourth set. JCC was able to put out the fire and were able to comeback, winning 25-22.

 

Jenna Caskey came up huge in the championship match, tallying 19 kills and a connected on .576 percent of her attacks. Karleigh Haines stepped up as well, coming away with 15 kills. Jennah Starkweather was able to chip in with eight kills, respectively. Maddy Russo had 36 assists on the day and added 14 digs. Cameryn Hawkins and Caskey both had 21 digs on the day as the team racked up 78 digs.

 

Caskey was named Region III Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player for her outstanding performance over her four matches. Caskey finished with 58 kills and 58 digs. Haines, Hawkins and Russo were named to the All-Tournament Team. Haines had a combined 51 kills with Russo having a total of 154 assists. Hawkins tallied 63 digs during the two-day tournament.

 

The Jayhawks will wait and see who their opponent with be at the NJCAA National championship Tournament held in Rochester, Minn. next November 14th-16th.
