Jayhawks geared up and ready to go at regionals

JAMESTOWN - Looking to make some noise this weekend, the No. 12 Jamestown Community College will compete in the NJCAA Eastern A District Championships hosted by SUNY Sullivan County Community College on Sunday.

The Jayhawks (4-10) will compete against familiar faces from Region III in Niagara County Community College and Mercyhurst North East. They will also face teams from Region XV in SUNY Ulster County Community College, Nassau Community College and SUNY Sullivan County Community College.

Having a week off since their last competition, Head Coach Kris Schimek has his team geared up and ready to go for their competition. “Our team is entering the national qualifiers having put forward the outright best week of practice the entire season,” said Schimek. “All the guys are ready and peaking at the right time, including the entire coaching staff. We’re going to be the best we can be Sunday and the rest will work itself out.”

Dan Torres (174) will look to build upon his historic season, looking to add to his 37-6 record. Torres, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the 174 pound weight class, has set a new single season record in wins and is settling for nothing but greatness. Torres has placed at five different opens/invitationals including a first-place finish at the JCC Open. During his run, Torres defeated competitors from the NCAA Division I, II and III ranks.

Torres will receive a first round bye and will face the winner of Greg Salavec of SUllivan and Hunter Derry of Mercyhurst North East.

Looking to get above a .500 record are Taige Jones (141) and Colten Studley (149) who have posted identical records of 14-17 on the year. Jones best feat of the season was a first-place finish at the Thunderwolves Open. Studley’s season has been highlighted by a third-place finish at the Thunderwolves Open, wrestling in the 141 weight division.

Jones will also receive the bye and will face the winner of Connor Llewelyn from Nassau and Jacob Studt from Ulster. Studley will Zachary Bonner from Ulster

Looking to also have strong showings are Otto Davidson (165) and Seth MacTavish (157). Davidson’s best feat has been a fifth-place finish at the Thunderwolves Open, also wrestling in the 141 weight division. Davidson and MacTavish finished the regular season strong, both picking up falls over Alfred State in the regular-season finale.

Davidson will face Dylan Muscarella from Mercyhurst North East and MacTavish will face Matt Gawron from Niagara County.

Cody Pool (133) will also look to perform well for the Jayhawks. Pool’s season has been highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the Waynesburg Invitational, competing in the 125 weight division. Pool’s record on the year is 3-4.

Pool will face Anthony Sobotker of Nassau in the first round.

Also suiting up for the Jayhawks will be So Murata (125), Jesse Storch, (184) and Jacob Smith (HWT.). Murata will face Liam Bullock from Sullivan, Storch will face Josh Thibeault from Niagara County. Smith will face Reagen Soledad from Mercyhurst North East in his first match of the day.

Action will start at 10 a.m. at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse.
