Jayhawks ready to make some noise at the 2020 NJCAA Wrestling Championships

JAMESTOWN - With the season nearing its end, the No. 12 Jamestown Community College wrestling team has one more challenge ahead of the to conclude the season.

 

The Jayhawks will have four wrestlers compete at the 2020 NJCAA Wrestling Championships, held in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

 

Highlighting the quartet of grapplers, Dan Torres (174) will look to cap off what has been a season to remember and one for the record books. Torres, the No. 1 174 pound wrestler in the latest rankings from Intermat, has compiled a season record of 38-7 with one loss against a NJCAA opponent.

 

Torres has proven his skills time and time again, defeating opponents from the NCAA Division I, II, and III ranks while place first at multiple opens and invitationals. Torres’ season has not been overlooked by the region, earning Region III Wrestler of the Week five times.

 

Torres received a berth into nationals after placing second two weeks ago at the 2020 NJCAA Eatern A District Championships. Torres went 1-1 on the day with his winning coming by a medical forfeit win. In the first-place match, Torres faced Jordan Bushey of Niagara County Community College, the previously ranked No. 1 184 pounder. Bushey bumped down a weight class and got the best of Torres, coming away with a 6-1 decision victory. 

 

In his first match on Friday, Torres will face No. 8 Justin Grant of No. 8 Ellsworth Community College from Region XI. The winner will face the winner of Misael Monarrez of Pratt Community College from Region IX or Dax Bennett of No. 1 Clarkmas Community College from Region XVIII.

 

Joining Torres at nationals will be Seth MacTavish (157), Taige Jones (141), and Otto Davidson (165).

 

MacTavish placed third at the 2020 NJCAA Eastern A District Championships, going 3-1 on the day and bringing his season record to 10-9 on the season. In his three wins on the day, MacTavish picked-up two falls and one technical fall.

 

MacTavish will face Davion Barnes of Itasca Community College from Region XIII. The winner will face the winner of Thomas Schock of Spartanburg Methodist College from Region X or Dallas Boone of No. 17 Neosho County Community College from Region VI.

 

Jones will bring in a record of 15-19 on the season into nationals after receiving a wildcard berth at the 2020 NJCAA Eastern A District Championships. Jones has shown that he can compete amongst tough competition, placing first at the Thunderwolves Open earlier in the season.

 

Jones will start his day off against Loye Burhead of Spartanburg Methodist in the first round. The winner will face the winner of Andy Poniatowski of No. 23 Triton College of Region IV or Jamaal Baird from Itasca.

 

JCC’s final competitor will be Davidson who was also awarded wildcard berth at the 2020 NJCAA Eastern A District Championships. Davidson has also competed against some tough competition especially at the Thunderwolves Open, placing fifth. Davidson will bring a record of 10-17 to nationals.

 

Davidson will face Caleb Wise of No. 29 Labette Community College from Region VI in the first round. The winner will face the winner of Izaih Duran of No. 3 North Idaho College from Region XVIII or No. 3 Isaiah Crosby of No. 5 Iowa Western Community College from Region XI.

 

Action will start this Friday at 9:30 a.m. central time  from the Mid-Atlantic Center.
