Four Jayhawks qualify for the National Championships

LOCH SHELDRAKE - The No. 12 Jamestown Community College wrestling team finished fourth of six teams at the annual NJCAA Eastern A District Championships hosted by SUNY Sullivan County Community College.

The Jayhawks had four wrestlers qualify for the 2020 NJCAA National Championships with Dan Torres (174) placing second, Seth MacTavish (157) placing third with Taige Jones (141) and Otto Davidson (165) both placing fourth and earning wildcard bids. "Today's competition presented some good outcomes and some bad," said Head Coach Kris Schimek. "Ultimately I would have liked to push another guy through but we will have to work with the guys we got."

Torres received a bye in the quarterfinals, placing him in the semifinals match. Torres was awarded a medical forfeit win as Hunter Derry of Mercyhurst North East was unable to compete. In the first place match, Torres was defeated by Jordan Bushey of Niagara County Community College by a 6-1 decision. "It was a tough loss for Torres but we lost to another guy that was ranked first in the country and it was a good match to get out of the way," continued Schimek.

MacTavish started out his day hot, picking up a fall over Matt Gawron of NCCC, needing 2:04 to do so in the quarterfinals match. In the semifinals match, MacTavish was bested by Gavin Leath of Nassau Community College by a 9-3 decision.

Knowing he still had a chance to qualify for the big dance, MacTavish needed to run the table. In the consolation semifinals, MacTavish got back in his winning ways, getting a fall over Anas Samir of SUNY Sullivan, needing 2:52 to do so. In the third place match, MacTavish went to work on Daniel Heffner of SUNY Sullivan, getting a 16-0 technical fall in 4:05.

Jones started his day with a bye in the quarterfinals, placing him in the semifinals against Connor Llewelyn of Nassau. Llewelyn got the best of Jones, getting a 19-2 technical fall. Jones got his first win of the day in the consolation semifinals, getting a fall over Zach Rosenthal of SUNY Sullivan, needing :52 to do so. In the third place match, Jones fell to Isaaiah Smith of Mercyhurst North East via fall in 1:52.

Davidson's day started out with a defeat against Dyn Muscarella of Mercyhurst North East, falling in an 8-3 decision. Moving to the consolation side of the bracket, Jones received  abye in the first round.

Moving on to the consolation semifinals, Davidson picked up a 7-2 decision victory over Dirani Haynes of SUNY Sullivan. Moving onto the third place match, Davidson faced Muscarella once again. Looking to get his revenge, Muscarella came away with a 7-4 decision victory.

"It was a great showing for Seth, Taige and Otto who also competed against some tough competition" said Schimek

Jesse Storch also picked up one victory on the day for the Jayhawks.

"From here on out it's one match at a time, it doesn't matter how you win at nationals as long as you win. It's the grind from here on out, time to embrace the spartan mindset," continued Schimek.

Jamestown will be off until next Friday when the team travels to Council Bluffs, Iowa where they will compete in the 2020 NJCAA National Championships at the Mid-America Center on March 6-7.
