Jayhawks take care of ECC in Sub Regional action

JAMESTOWN - Keeping their season alive, the No. 4 Jamestown Community College women's basketball team edged past No. 5 Erie Community College, 46-38 in the Region III Sub Regional game.

 

The Jayhawks (10-15) were led by Gabby Iuculano, scoring 19 points including 10 made free throws. Kayla Hohl and Marisa Schuppenhauer added nine points each. On the glass, Jesse Zenns and Linnea Jimerson each had eight rebounds with Hohl, Schuppenhauer and Abi Lisciandro grabbing six rebounds each.

 

Jamestown came out of the gates firing, scoring 12 unanswered points to start the game. Hohl scored five points while Iuculano made two baskets. The Kats cut the deficit too two possessions with Jameelah Gaines and Nukia Funderburk knocking down a pair of three-pointers. JCC would hold on to take a 12-6 lead after the first frame.

 

After taking a 20-13 lead into the half, the Jayhawks found their offense in the third quarter, outscoring the Kats 18-12. JCC started to create some separation in the opening minutes, scoring nine unanswered. During the stretch. Iuculano led the way with five points with Schuppenhauer adding four points.

 

WIth a basket from ECC to halt the run, JCC went on an 8-0 run to get their biggest lead of the game, gaining a 37-15 lead with 4:27 to go in the third frame. The Kats battled back but would trail 38-25 going into the final quarter.

 

As ECC kept applying the pressure in the fourth quarter, the Jayhawks got the stops when needed to help secure the win.

 

In the game, the Jayhawks controlled the glass, grabbing 49 rebounds to the Kats' 34 rebounds. JCC also capitalized on the turnovers from ECC, scoring 20 points to the Kats' 10 points.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday as they face No. 1 Niagara COunty Community College this Saturday in the Region III Semifinals.
