BATAVIA – After a strong second quarter, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team fell short in a 71-52 loss to Genesee Community College in conference action.
The Jayhawks (8-12, 1-3 WNYAC) were led offensively by Kayla Hohl with 16 points with Gabby Iuculano adding 14 points. Jesse Zenns provided some offense in the paint, scoring 10 points on the night. On the glass, Linnea Jimerson had a team-high nine rebounds (3 offense, 6 defense) while Marisa Schuppenhauer grabbed seven rebounds (5 offense, 2 defense). Abi Lisciandro, Macey Lundmark and Iuculano finished the contest with five boards each.
After a slow first quarter, Jamestown started the second frame on a 10-0 run, making the score 19-15 in favor of the Cougars. During the run, Zenns made her presence be known, scoring two layups. GCC stopped the run and quickly grew their lead once again, making it 24-15 with under three minutes until intermission.
The Jayhawk did keep pace in the final seconds of the first half, trailing 26-22 going into halftime. In the second quarter, JCC outscored the Cougars 17-7. In the quarter, Jamestown came away with eight steals and caused a total of 11 turnovers.
Coming into the third quarter, the Cougars played with the same type of aggression in the first quarter. GCC scored nine of the first 12 points of the frame to get their lead out to 37-25 and was trying to put the game out of reach.
The Jayhawks flipped a switch at the halfway mark of the third quarter and got the game within one point. Hohl provided a spark coming in off the bench, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to seven points. Schuppenhauer fed off the momentum, driving the lane for two quick layups. Zenns capped off a 12-0 run with a layup of her own.
After a valiant effort, the Cougars weathered the storm, pushing their lead back to double digits in the early moments of the fourth quarter.
On the night, the Jayhawks controlled the glass, finishing with 42 rebounds to the Cougars' 35 rebounds. GCC did hold the advantage in assists, finishing with 18 compared to JCC's eight assists.
Jamestown with finish their three-game road trip this weekend as they go for the season sweep of Erie Community College at 1 p.m.
