COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Jamestown Community College women's basketball team fell to Columbus State Community College Friday evening, 109-63.
The Jayhawks (4-5) were led offensively by Sophia DeMarco with 10 points while Linnea Jimerson and Katelyn Fardink added nine points each. Demarco was one rebound away from a double-double, grabbing nine boards (6 offense, 3 defense) while Courtney Hemminger grabbing nine rebounds (4 offense, 5 defense) as well. Jesse Zenns had a stellar night protecting the paint, tallying a career-high five blocks.
JCC found themselves in the hole early, facing a 7-2 deficit. Abi Lisciandro cut the lead to one possession, knocking down a jump shot. The Cougars quickly got their lead back to multiple possessions, extending their lead to double digits at the midway point in the first frame. Columbus State increased their lead to 24 late in the first quarter before Fardink knocked down her three-pointer to make it 30-9. The teams traded layups in the final seconds to make it 32-11 after one.
With a tall order to fill after the first quarter, the Jayhawks showed no quit, increasing their point total in the remaining quarters. Jamestown scored 16 points in the seconds, 17 points in the third and 19 points in the final frame.
The Cougars had four players score in double figures with Mickale Bates scoring a team-high 23 points, respectively. The Cougars also had two players grabbed double digit rebounds with Melia Walder leading the way with 13 boards.
The Cougars shot 44.9 percent (40-for-89) from the floors including 45.7 percent (16-for-35) from beyond the arc. The Jayhawks shot 29 percent (20-for-69) from the floors and made 33.3 percent (8-for-24) from the three-point line. Columbus State took advantage of the Jamestown mistakes, scoring 45 points off turnovers to JCC's nine. Jamestown did have the advantage in the rebound battle, grabbing 52 to the Cougars 43.
The Jayhawks will have a quick turnaround as the face Sinclair Community College tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
