Jayhawks Capture WNYAC Crown with Win at ECC

BUFFALO - It was a milestone meet for the Jamestown Community College men's swimming & diving team Monday evening, capturing the Western New York Athletic Conference Championship title, defeating Erie Community College 91-58.

 

"It was great to get the conference championship for JCC," said head coach Todd Conklin, coaching in his first season. "These kids have been working very hard and knew this was one of our goals. We have other goals to accomplish but getting to bring the first one home has been great."

 

The Jayhawks (4-0, 4-0 WNYAC) were led by sophomore Elliot Johson (Panama, NY/Panama Central), picking up three victories on the night. Elliot Johnson set a new personal best in the 200 yard freestyle, posting a time of 2:07.96. Elliot Johnson also posted times of 25.07 in the 50 yard freestyle and 58.13 in the 100 yard freestyle.

 

"Our men's team was led by Elliot who had a fantastic meet," said Conklin. "Colby also continues to grow with every meet as well."

 

Sophomore Eathan Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central) posted two victories on the day for JCC, setting a new personal best in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:19.14. Eathan Johnson also won the 100 yard IM with a time of 1:10.68.

 

Freshman Colby Pantall (Jamestown, NY/Maple Grove HS) had one victory on the night in the 500 yard freestyle, posting a time of 6:16.19. Pantall also set personal bests in the 1650 yard freestyle (21:38.90) and the 100 yard freestyle (1:00.78).

 

Freshman Jackson Vanstrom (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) picked up one first-place finish on the night, winning the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 21:17.31.

 

Freshman Matthew Fennell (Fourways Garden, Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edwards VII School) picked up one victory on the day for JCC, placing first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:48.18, a new personal best.

 

Freshman Maksat Mametjumayev (Sayat, Lebap, Turkmenistan/Ashgabat #19) also had a career day in the pool, posting personal best in the 50 yard freestyle (39.58) and the 100 yard freestyle (1:47.08).


"Overall, we'll take the championship," Conklin said. "But we all know there are more things to accomplish this season."

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday, April 3rd, as they compete in the ECC Tri-Meet against ECC and Roberts Wesleyan College.
