JCC secures bid to host the NJCAA Division III Golf Championships in 2021 and 2022

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced that Jamestown Community College and the Chautauqua Golf Club will host the NJCAA Division III Golf Championship for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The 2021 championship will be held June 8-11 while the 2022 championship will be held June 7-10.

JCC was scheduled to host the championship for the 21st consecutive year this June but the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are thrilled to host the NJCAA Division III Golf Championships fir the next two years,” said George Sisson, JCC’s athletics and recreation director. “We’re proud of the fact that we have hosted the event for the past 20 years and have garnered the support of so many people and organizations to make it memorable for the participants.”

JCC, first awarded the NJCAA Division III Golf Championship in 2000, is now the third longest consecutive host site at any level in the NJCAA. The longest consecutive host site is the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Kansas, home of Hutchinson Community College, for 72 years. The second longest consecutive host site is San Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colorado for 62 years.

“We don’t take this for granted,” said Sisson. “A lot of work goes into putting a bid together. We have to submit a bid just like every other school and we are grateful to host it for as long as we have.”

The committee that help submitted the bid are representatives from Jamestown Community College, the Faculty Student Association, Chautauqua Golf Club and the Post-Journal.

In the inaugural season of hosting the tournament, JCC’s Jayhawks soared to a first place finish under the guidance of head coach Bill Burk. As a team, JCC finished 10 strokes ahead of second place Monroe Community College. Tony Bisignano was the Jayhawks’ top finisher, placing fourth. Pete Scheira was one stroke off, tying for fifth place. The other top performer for JCC was Joe Traniello, who tied for eighth place.

Hosting the national tournament, Sisson exclaimed, “helps keep JCC on the national stage."

“The tournament has a huge economic impact on our community,” said Sisson. “It helps kick off the tourism season in Chautauqua County.”
