BATAVIA - The 2019-20 season for the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team came to an end Tuesday evening, falling to No. 3 Genesee Community College 104-91 in the Region III Sub Regional game.
The Jayhawks (8-17) were led offensively by Jordan Thomas with 28 points and Sheick Kourmora with 24 points. Donathan Daniels added 17 points on the night. Kourmora had his best rebounding performance of the season, grabbing nine boards (3 offense, 9 defense). Thomas and Daniels had exceptional performances on the glass as well, grabbing seven boards each.
Jamestown came to the gaem ready to play, getting out to a quick start by going up 7-3 with a three-pointer from Thomas and baskets from Kourmora and Daniels. The Cougars rebounded, scoring six unanswered to get up 9-7.
Both sides were very familiar with each other, having just played three days prior. With that familiarity, neither team gained more than a two-possession advantage. Thomas did give the Jayhawks an eight-point lead with 5:35 to go until halftime, going up 37-29.
GCC got back into the game, going on a 10-2 run and tying the game up at 39 apiece with a layup from Selassie Bourne. The Cougars continued to apply the pressure and regained the lead with 2:50 to go until halftime, up 42-41.
Jamestown kept themselves in the game as they trailed by three at halftime, down 48-45.
Coming into the second half, GCC outscored the Jayhawks 10-1 to go up 58-46 in the first few minutes. JCC did not get discouraged as they cut the deficit down to five points as Kourmora drove to the tin for a layup to go down 65-60.
Genesee saw their lead go up to as many as 19 points in the second half and secured the win.
On the night, the Jayhawks went 34-for-74 (45.9 percent) from the floor as the Cougars went 39-for-73 (53.4 percent) from the field.
The Cougars held the advantage in rebounds, grabbing 44 to the Jayhawks' 36. GCC also held the advantage in points in the paint, 52-46.
The Jayhawks will look to bring a majority of their team back for the 2020-2021 season with Donathan Daniels, Jason Guillen and Markus Coleman being the lone departures.
