Jayhawks Clutch When It Counts Most

The JCC Jayhawks men's basketball team (9-5) hosted the Knights of Niagara College for the first home game of the spring semester.   The Jayhawks and Knight went back and forth and with 5 minutes gone in the period the Knights held a 13-9 lead.  The next five minutes would see the Knights go on a run, leading 20-12 at one point before the Jayhawks went on a run of their own and after a clutch 3 point shot by #4 Michael Bush (Harlem), the score was Knights 22, Jayhawks 17 with momentum on the Jayhawks side.  The teams would tie and swap leads in the next 5 minutes, and with 5 minutes left in the half, it was Knights 30, Jayhawks 29.  The Jayhawks built a 37-30 lead but then the momentum switched back to the Knights who tied the game at 37 with less than 2 minutes to play.  Another clutch 3 pointer by the Jayhawks, this time shot by #12 Tyler Moffe, broke the game open and when the half came to an end it was Jayhawks 44, Knights 39.

The second half began with the Jayhawks pulling away, and the Knights hitting 3's of their own as the teams kept right up with each other and with 5 minutes played in the second half, it was Jayhawks 52, Knights 51.  The next five minutes had the teams still going back and forth with scoring and solid defense as the Jayhawks held a 65-62 lead with 10 minutes left to play.  The next five minutes saw the Knights get hot, and with a clutch 3 pointer of their own, the Knights got back in the game and as the teams swapped the lead, with 5 minutes left to play, the Knights held a 75 – 74 lead over the Jayhawks.  The Knights jumped out to a 79-74 lead with less than 4 minutes to play.  Then, with a little over 2 minutes remaining, #10 Derek Ice (Bronx) made a great play and drew a foul to make the score 79-78 in favor of the Knights.  His clutch free throw that followed tied the game 79-79 and the momentum was in favor of the Jayhawks as they built a 85-79 lead with 40 seconds remaining.  But the Knights would not go down that easily and hit a clutch 3 pointer to pull closer 85-82.  The Jayhawks would score again and with 20 seconds remaining held a 87-82 lead.  The Knights hit another clutch 3 pointer second later to pull within two points 87-85 with 10 seconds remaining.  However, this classic would end on a free throw shot by #10 Derek Ice as the Jayhawks downed the Knights 88-85.
