The encouragement came from the third-base coaching box and it was directed at Paul Tripi as the latter dug into the batter's box.
"Help the cause here, Trip," Jamestown Community College head baseball coach Matt Cummings implored, his voice echoing through Diethrick Park in the first game of a twin bill with SUNY Broome on Sunday afternoon.
Tripi, who responded with an RBI double, didn't disappoint.
Neither did any of his teammates.
On a history-making day of sorts, the Jayhawks — behind strong starting pitching and 25 hits — rolled to 10-5 and 11-1 NJCAA Region 3 Division III victories over the Hornets. Not only did the sweep — their second in 24 hours — raise Jamestown CC's record to 5-4 overall and 4-2 In the region, it marked the first time in Cummings' four-year tenure that his team had swept a pair of doubleheaders on the same weekend.
It was good day to be a Jayhawk on a mild afternoon on the city's eastside.
"The last four games we played complete team baseball in all three phases — offense, defense and pitching," Cummings said.
In fact, it was easy as 1-2-3-4.
The first four batters in Cummings' lineup — German Nolasco, Carlo Rodriguez, Tripi and Roberto Aracena — accounted for 18 hits, including six for extra bases.
"The top … guys in our lineup did exactly what their job is — get on base and score runs."
Meanwhile, Tripi was the winning pitcher in the first game, allowing just two hits and one run in five innings, while Caleb Caldwell scattered four hits in a complete-game performance that ended via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2.
How good were the Jayhawks offensively?
German Nolasco (double) finished the day with four hits, four walks, an RBI and four runs scored; Rodriguez had five hits (double), an RBI, a walk and four runs scored; Tripi finished with five hits, including two doubles and a triple, two RBIs, two walks and four runs scored; and Aracena added four hits (triple), six RBIs and two runs scored.
And those were just the offensive headliners in the doubleheader.
In addition, Caldwell had two hits and three RBIs; Spencer TeWinkle had four hits, including a home run and three RBIs; and Jake Brown drove in three runs.
"It feels great to get that first sweep to get some confidence rolling,"Cummings said.
The Jayhawks are off until the weekend when they travel to Genesee CC on Saturday. The two teams square off again at Diethrick Park on Sunday.
